'Can’t hide his soul': Robert De Niro slams removal of anti-Trump comments from awards speech

Robert De Niro — famous for his roles in "Taxi Driver," "Goodfellas," "Mean Streets," "Raging Bull" and other Martin Scorsese films — has been a scathing critic of former President Donald Trump. The veteran actor, now 80, made some anti-Trump comments during his recent speech at the Gotham Awards in New York City — where he discussed Scorsese's new film "Killers of the Flower Moon."

But according to the Guardian's Andrew Pulver, De Niro said that parts of his speech — specifically, anti-Trump comments — were removed from the prompter. And De Niro, in response, "read the missing section of the speech from his phone," Pulver reports.

According to Pulver, De Niro "refused to thank the film's backers, Apple." The veteran actor, referring to the removal of his anti-Trump comments, said, "I don't feel like thanking them at all for what they did. How dare they do that, actually."

During the missing section of his speech, De Niro said, "History isn't history any more. Truth is not truth. Even facts are being replaced by alternative facts and driven by conspiracy theories and ugliness. In Florida, young students are taught that slaves developed skills which can be applied for their personal benefit."

The "Taxi Driver"/"Raging Bull" star went on to say, "Lying has become just another tool in the charlatan's arsenal. The former president lied to us more than 30,000 times during his four years in office, and he's keeping up the pace in his current campaign of retribution. But with all his lies, he can't hide his soul. He attacks the weak, destroys the gifts of nature, and shows disrespect — for example, by using 'Pocahontas' as a slur."
