Republican Rep. Chris Collins of New York has resigned from Congress, effective Tuesday, according to Bloomberg News reporter Erik Wasson.
He submitted his resignation letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi Monday, Wasson found, and it will be read from the floor the following day.
Earlier reports on Monday revealed that Collins intends to plead guilty on federal securities charges, first brought by prosecutors before the 2018 election. Wasson won his re-election despite the cloud of the charges hanging over him.
At the time, President Donald Trump lashed out at then-Attorney General Jeff Sessions' Justice Department for bringing charges against Collins and another Republican, Rep. Duncan Hunter of California. Collins was the first sitting member of Congress to endorse Trump for president in the 2016 GOP primary.
