Harris maintains 'massive financial advantage over Trump' in election home stretch

Although Vice President Kamala Harris' 2024 presidential campaign didn't exist until July 21 — when President Joe Biden ended his reelection campaign and endorsed her — she has had a major fundraising operation that draws on both large and small donors.

A pro-Harris nonprofit, according to the New York Times, received around $50 million from former Microsoft CEO Bill Gates, yet the vice president's campaign also relies on small $20 or $25 donations from supporters.

With Election Night 2024 only four days away, Harris and GOP nominee Donald Trump are neck in neck in many national and battleground state polls.

But Harris, according to Politico's Jessica Piper, remains "dominant" in terms of fundraising.

"Kamala Harris' fundraising operation has been so dominant that she has brought in more new donors than Donald Trump every single day heading into the final stretch of the election," Piper explains in an article published on November 1. "The vice president's financial advantage is well-known, but most of the attention has gone to the candidates' respective money totals."

Piper adds, "That money has allowed Harris to build up a much greater campaign apparatus than Trump, while the former president has had to rely more on outside super PACs for support."

Donors, according to Piper, "reflect the most engaged supporters" in a political race.

"After Trump's conviction in the New York hush money case in late May," Piper reports, "he briefly surpassed Biden's campaign in terms of total donors, reversing Democrats' longstanding money advantage. But Harris saw a massive surge in donors after she replaced Biden in mid-July, and since then, she has continued to draw new donors far faster than Trump, according to a detailed Politico analysis of fundraising data through mid-October."

Piper reports that as of October 16, the "Biden-turned-Harris operation" had "accumulated more than 7 million donors, up from about 5.3 million that the Biden campaign had at the same stage in 2020."
