Republicans spent much of the past year aggressively redrawing congressional maps to give themselves an advantage in the midterms. With Election Day approaching, the GOP has burned through a lot of money and is getting fewer results than expected
The unprecedented mid-decade attempt by the GOP to redraw district boundaries has resulted in the creation of 14 new strongly Republican districts all over the country, but the Republicans are currently seen as certain to win only five of these, the Punchbowl News reporters Ally Mutnick and Anthony Adragna say.
The remaining nine are still in the running, and the Republicans are spending money in races which, in theory, were meant to favor them.
As Punchbowl has reported, since September 1st Republican candidates and super PACs have spent almost $100 million on advertising in those nine districts, an unusually costly attempt to take advantage of a map intended to improve the party's position as it approached November.
The Republicans deny the notion that the aim of the redistricting campaign had been merely to create safe seats. They claim that the new boundaries were drawn with the intention of improving the Republicans' chances in the areas of the House that are most competitive and also to give protection to the GOP's small majority.
However, the political environment has made that strategy more difficult.
As Punchbowl reported, the historically low poll numbers of President Donald Trump, the increasing interest rates, high petrol prices due to the Iran conflict, and the ongoing voter discontent with the economy have caused Republicans to have to defend ground that usually tends to be in their favor.
Many Democratic incumbents also chose to stay and contest the seats rather than leave the districts which had become much more Republican as a result of redistricting, since their established fundraising networks, campaign organizations, and high level of name recognition have made it more difficult to unseat them than the Republicans had expected.
That has therefore forced GOP-aligned groups to spend large amounts of money.
Several of the districts which have been redrawn are enjoying support for Trump by double digits in 2024 and are still attracting large amounts of money from Republican advertisers. In fact, three of the new districts in Texas have attracted about $29 million in Republican spending, and the Republicans are also carrying out heavy spending against Democratic incumbents in Florida, Ohio and North Carolina.
At the same time, the Democrats are becoming more and more inclined to regard Republican areas as being competitive.
“Republicans are trying to shore up things in deep-red districts, and we’re on offense,” Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee Chair Suzan DelBene told Punchbowl.
The Republicans say that they are still in a position to take the seats.
“Democrats are lighting money on fire trying to save incumbents in seats they’ve already lost,” National Republican Congressional Committee spokesperson Mike Marinella said.
The GOP could in the end end up winning a large number of the districts that it has redrawn, but just less than a month before voting takes place, the Republicans are spending almost $100 million to ensure that their own map produces the desired result.
