In a stark warning to fellow Republicans, Sen. Jim Justice (R-W.Va.) cautioned that their plan to require states to share the burden of funding the U.S.'s largest food assistance program could backfire and cost the GOP control of Congress.
Speaking candidly in an interview Tuesday, as reported by Politico, Justice warned of the potential political fallout: “If we don’t watch out, people are going to get hurt, people are going to be upset. It’s going to be the No.1 thing on the nightly news all over the place. And then, we could very well awaken to a situation in this country where the majority quickly becomes the minority.”
The Virginia Republican continued: “The Senate has always been counted on to have real wisdom and take their time and really get it right."
Speaking to reporters on Monday, Boozman revealed his goal to finalize the agricultural portion of the sweeping megabill by the end of this week.
The Senate Agriculture Committee is facing significant challenges in meeting its target of $150 billion in net savings. To achieve this, they would need to implement $220 billion in cuts to Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, or food stamps) funding, which would help offset a proposed $70 billion package of farm bill updates that Republicans aim to include in the larger legislative package.
Recent data from the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, a left-leaning think tank, shows that 16% of West Virginia's population relied on SNAP benefits during the 2024 fiscal year. This rate is notably higher than the national average, which stands at 12%, per the report.
