Next to the presidential race, the Democratic National Committee's top priority for 2024 is fighting for control of Congress. Democratic strategists fear the possibility of Republicans flipping the U.S. Senate, but they also feel that Democrats have a good shop at flipping the U.S. House of Representatives — where Republicans have only a narrow single-digit majority.
According to Axios' Hans Nichols, the GOP group American Action Network "is launching a $9.5 million ad campaign targeting 10 vulnerable Democrats on immigration."
"The big buy by the American Action Network is a clear indication that Republicans believe that concerns about immigration and border security can help them win up-for-grabs congressional seats in November," Nichols explains in an article published on June 13. "Republican leaders, aligned with former President Trump, want to spread the blame for the record number of illegal crossings in recent years not just on President (Joe) Biden, but on Democratic policies in general."

The aim of the group's ad buy, according to Nichols, is linking "vulnerable Democrats with early decisions in Biden's presidency" that Republicans blame for "a crisis at the southern border."
Nichols notes that the American Action Network is arguing that Biden's recent executive order on migrants and the border won't solve the problem.
"By keeping the ad campaign focused on issues, the American Action Network, a 501(c)(4) group, can maintain its tax-exempt status," Nichols reports. "The group frequently runs summer campaigns on conservative issues. It's closely affiliated with the House GOP leadership's main super PAC, the Congressional Leadership Fund, which can engage in more direct political advocacy."
