Politico reports Ghislaine Maxwell, the convicted co-conspirator of late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, is refusing to take questions in the House Oversight Committee’s probe into Epstein and the Justice Department’s handling of the case.
The news, courtesy of Oversight Chair James Comer (R-Ky.)., reveals Maxwell would invoke her Fifth Amendment rights if she sat with congressional investigators. Comer told Politico on Friday that there was no point to the interrogation under those circumstances.
“Her lawyers have replied that she’s not going to answer any questions,” said Comer. “She’s only going to plead the Fifth. I mean, I could spend a bunch of taxpayer dollars to send staff and members down there, and if she’s going to plead the Fifth, I don’t know that that’s a good investment.”
Politico further reported that Comer issued a subpoena for Maxwell’s testimony in July, but her legal team quickly responded that she would only agree to take questions under certain conditions. One of those conditions was Maxwell being granted immunity from further criminal proceedings and receiving questions in advance. Another was that her appeal to the Supreme Court to revisit her conviction be resolved.
The Supreme Court rejected her request.
Maxwell agreed to sit for an unsworn two-day interview with Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche (who was also President Donald Trump's personal attorney) in July. After repeatedly minimized Trump’s interaction with convicted sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein, she was soon transferred to a minimum-security facility in Bryan, Texas, where sex criminals are typically not allowed to serve out their sentences.
Maxwell is now preparing a commutation application for Trump’s consideration — which was reportedly done with "secretarial services" from prison warden Tanisha Hall according to The Atlantic.
