GA Dems take legal action against MAGA-dominated election board

Three MAGA Republicans on the Georgia State Election Board have been a source of frustration not only to Democrats in the Peach State, but also, to Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger — a conservative Republican who has been vehemently critical of their plan to change rules so close to the 2024 presidential election.

The Washington Post's Amy Gardner, in an article published on September 25, details the way in which three Democrats are playing hardball and taking legal action against the Donald Trump loyalists.

According to Gardner, the three Democrats "filed a petition late Tuesday in Fulton County Superior Court claiming that (Gov. Brian) Kemp is required to hold hearings on the matters and to remove the board members if he finds they violated state law."

In the petition, Cathy Woolard — who formerly chaired the Fulton County Board of Registration & Elections — argued, "We have a board that appears to be running amok, and we have one avenue, the governor, for removing them in instances when they are breaking the law. We simply must take this action in order to attempt to force him to do his job."

One of the new rules the Democrats are critical of allows county election boards in Georgia to conduct "reasonable inquiries" before certifying election results if they claim that any irregularities occurred. This rule, the Democrats say, is a recipe for chaos.

Another new rule approved by the three MAGA Republicans on the Georgia State Election Board requires counties to hand-out the number of ballots on Election Night.

Gardner notes, "The offices of Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger and Attorney General Chris Carr, both Republicans, have come out against the rules. Carr's office issued an opinion stating that the election board had overstepped its authority by passing rules that go beyond what state law allows."
