GOP GA Election Board sued to avoid planned certification delay efforts: report

The Democratic National Convention and the Democratic Party of Georgia is suing the Georgia State Election Board to avoid any 2024 election interference from the GOP-led body in November.

Although reports earlier this month that Donald Trump's insults towards Georgia Republican Governor Brian Kemp could cost the ex-president support from the state's GOP leaders, the majority Republican election board is still looking to make the certification of results more difficult.

MSNBC producer Kyle Griffin on Monday reported via X that the lawsuit, Democrats say, is to "prevent Trump's allies on the Board from blocking the certification of the 2024 election."

Additionally, "The DNC says the lawsuit is to ensure that Georgia's State Election Board 'doesn't turn a straightforward and mandatory act of certification into a broad license for any county board member to try and delay or block the certification of election results and the will of Georgia voters,'" Griffin reports.

A Georgia state rule that will "make facilitating free and fair elections harder for election officials" was passed earlier this month.

CNN reported that the Republican-led election board "will give county election boards the authority to demand more information, including the ability to conduct inquiries, before certifying election results."

The New York Times notes:

Members of the board who voted to pass the new rules said that they would not permit officials to ignore deadlines for certification set by state law. But the lawsuit notes that some local election officials in Georgia have already sought to delay or refuse certification, and that the new measures add to a legal uncertainty that undermines the entire election process across the state.

The lawsuit, according to the Times, emphasizes that "delaying certification" could potentially cause "mass disenfranchisement of eligible, registered Georgians."
