Conservative GOP ex-gov: Georgia 'back in play' for Harris

Although former Georgia Lt. Gov. Geoff Duncan is a conservative Republican, he has been an outspoken critic of 2024 GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump and his efforts to overturn the 2020 election results in his state.

Duncan, who has endorsed presumptive 2024 Democratic nominee Kamala Harris for president, attended a Harris rally in Atlanta on Tuesday, July 30. And during a CNN appearance, he argued that Georgia is very much "in play" for her.

Duncan told CNN, "Even the Democrats' biggest opponents can't deny that this has been almost a flawless transition from Joe Biden to Kamala Harris, with the money being raised, the energy."

Once deep red, Georgia has evolved into a swing state in recent years. Georgia went to Trump in 2016 and President Joe Biden in 2020, although polls taken before Biden dropped out of the 2024 race showed Trump ahead in the Peach State.

The former Georgia lieutenant governor pointed out that Harris' campaign got off to a very energetic start.

"I've been hanging around Georgia politics…. for well over a decade; I've never seen anything like this, with this much energy behind it," Duncan told CNN. "I'm standing here as a Republican, but more importantly, as an American — someone who cares about the future of this country more than I do the future of Donald Trump. And quite honestly, I think there's a large batch of us out there that want to see us get back on track."

Duncan continued, "And I've just gotta imagine that the Georgia suburbs, the Atlanta suburbs are back in play. Events like this and just the energy in the neighborhoods tell me that Georgia is back in play."
