Fox News is determined to ensure that its viewers live in an alternate reality — one where President Donald Trump is competent, free of any credible accusations of criminal activity, and completely blameless for his worst offenses.
Host Harris Faulkner took an especially galling step to maintain this false image of the president on Tuesday while discussing Trump's insults of former Vice President Joe Biden. Contributor Donna Brazile pointed out that Trump had lashed out at Biden by citing an autocrat.
"We know that when the president was in Japan, and the murderous dictator of North Korea said that Joe Biden was a 'low-IQ individual,' that the president basically said 'absolutely.' And he was on foreign soil!" said Brazile.
"Well, that's not what he said," interjected Faulkner. She later added: "You misquoted the president."
"What did he say?" asked Brazile.
"Well, he didn't retweet or re-say what a dictator has said," said Faulkner. Then she quickly moved on.
Um, what? Let's check the tape on that:
Indeed, Trump did repeat a dictator's insult and clearly gave it his endorsement. Faulkner's claim to the contrary is entirely baseless. If anything, Brazile was giving Trump too much credit by accepting at face value the president's claim to be accurately presenting Kim Jong-un's comments — who knows if Kim even mentioned Biden — but Faulkner cannot deny that that's what Trump was purporting to be doing.
Trump later even exacerbated the original offense by repeating his claims, pretending to be surprised that anyone was offended:
