Americans fleeing Trump’s rule reveal major regrets about life overseas

Fleeing overseas to escape President Donald Trump's America has become a common daydream on the left, but according to a new report from Wired, regrets are piling up as those who have managed to make the move have found life uncomfortable on the other side.

As the Tuesday report outlines, "thousands of Americans" have moved to Europe over the last few years. While there have been various reasons cited for such a move — including the desire for "adventure" and a slower-paced life — there has been one major undeniable bonus for "many" of them: "political refuge in the wake of Trump’s second term."

One American who Wired spoke to, "Annie," said that she had been fooled by "huge misconceptions" about life in the U.K. prior to making her move there in the fall of 2024.

"There are huge misconceptions about access to quality health care, standard of living… the quality of life is significantly lower than in the US,” she explained, adding that, “Things in the U.K. that are considered luxury items are very common” stateside, including appliances like dishwashers and dryers.

Annie also lamented the difficulties she experienced with the British healthcare system, having moved while pregnant, and the lower salaries on offer. She and her husband are now planning to move back to the U.S. in the summer.

"I found it particularly surprising how people feel so comfortable mocking my accent and culture, even in a workplace environment,” she added. “The U.K. is very much a place of ‘it is what it is,’ but as Americans we are taught to always improve and strive for better things."

Another American expat, "Josh," detailed the difficulties he experienced after moving to Berlin in 2023, a jump based "in part" on a grim expectation for the way the 2024 election would shake out.

“Finding work was so hard, and the endless bureaucracy had grown worse since I’d left,” he explained to Wired. “I missed the friendlier people, freedom of speech, and ease of daily life [in the U.S.]... If you aren’t born and raised there, and don’t look German, you’ll never be fully accepted.”

Josh is now, "as of a few months ago," living in the U.S. again, and told the outlet that he was feeling much "happier" and "accepted" by those around him.

“Once I was in Germany and had some distance from the situation in the US,” he said, “I felt perhaps I had overreacted.”

"A noticeable number of American influencers and anonymous social media users are calling it quits, often sheepishly confessing that life wasn’t what they expected — and that they missed their old lives back in the U.S.," the report detailed. "On subreddits dedicated to these kinds of discussions, like r/expats, r/GoingToSpain, r/AmericanExpatsUK, r/AmerExit, you can now find a number of stories about difficulties building a new community, trouble finding work, icier cultural norms compared to the open friendliness of America, and sometimes a higher-than-expected European cost of living. Many posts now feature people asking for a new kind of advice: Is it okay for me to miss, or even to want to move, back home?"
