Even far-right televangelist Pat Robertson thinks Alabama's abortion law 'has gone too far'

As part of a long-running movement to overturn Roe v. Wade, the critical Supreme Court ruling that established that the constitutional right to privacy protects the decision to end a pregnancy, the Alabama Senate passed a law on Tuesday that would ban nearly all abortions.

It would, in fact, make abortion punishable by up to 99 years in prison.

The law has sparked outrage, and it is likely to inspire legal objections that will find their way up to the Supreme Court. Other conservative states, too, have been passing their own versions restrictive and punitive laws prohibiting abortions. The ultimate aim is clear: Have these bans face court challenges, appeal them to the Supreme Court, and have Trump's newly installed justices overturn precedent and permit states to ban abortion.

Alabama's law is the most extreme yet that we've seen. In fact, it's so extreme that even far-right televangelist Pat Robertson — who fiercely opposed abortion — spoke out against it on his show "The 700 Club."

“I think Alabama has gone too far, they’ve passed a law that would give a 99-year prison sentence to those who commit abortions,” he said. “There’s no exception for rape or incest."

He noted that, by being too extreme, the law may be strategically unwise.

"It’s an extreme law and they want to challenge Roe v. Wade, but my humble view is that this is not the case we want to bring to the Supreme Court because I think this one will lose,” he said.
