Elections expert explains how to spot 'very first clues of the Trump phenomenon'

CNN Chief National Correspondent John King, reporting 2024 presidential election coverage Tuesday, detailed the "clues" viewers can pinpoint to understand how Donald Trump is performing with voters across the country.

"In 2016, if you're with us in 2016, one of the very first clues of the Trump phenomenon came right here," King began. "In the early results of Kentucky, we saw in the small rural counties — not only with Donald Trump running it up — but running it up in excess of [Senator] Mitt Romney (R-UT). Running it up in excess of [former President] George W. Bush. Getting new people to come out and vote Republican. That's what made Donald Trump the force he was in 2016. So we're gonna look along these lines again."

Noting that Trump would likely win Kentucky — which NBC News confirmed — King noted, "Some people might say, why do we care?"

"Let's just take a peek here to see," he continued. "You have 25 percent here in Greenup County, [Kentucky], Donald Trump had 72 percent. So you just go back and look. Is the rural Trump base coming out like he did in 2016 out of the woodwork?"

The CNN correspondent then pointed to the Trump's numbers in the same county so far in 2024.

"He's at 72 percent," King said. "In 2020, he is at 72 percent. You just go back to 2016 and look. There he is at 71percent. So, essentially consistent turnout for Donald Trump in the small rural counties that are critical to him."
