'Beyond tasteless': The Economist slammed for 'disrespectful' anti-Biden cover

On the 4th of July, The Economist tweeted the cover of its new issue — slamming not only President Joe Biden, but also, Democrats who are still supporting him as their 2024 presidential nominee.

The cover is headlined "No Way to Run a Country" and depicts a walker with the seal of the President of the United States.

The Economist tweeted, "The presidential debate was awful for Joe Biden, but the cover­up has been worse. The dishonesty of his campaign provokes contempt. He must withdraw."

The cover story for The Economist's July 6 edition is headlined, "Why Biden Must Withdraw" and attacks the president's campaign for trying to "deny what tens of millions of Americans saw with their own eyes" during Biden's June 27 debate with Donald Trump on CNN."

The Economist, however, doesn't endorse Trump, instead describing the election as "a choice between the incapable and the unspeakable" and arguing that "Americans deserve better."

On X, formerly Twitter, Politico's Eli Stokels posted, "Yesterday KJP twice denied that Biden had seen a doctor, the second time very explicitly: 'He did not get checked out by the doctor.' A few hours later: Biden tries to reassure governors asking about his health by telling them he just had a checkup."

The Economist's July 6 cover is receiving an abundance of reactions on X.

Journalist Itamar Montalvão was highly critical of the cover, tweeting, "Terrible cover. I'd like to remember that Roosevelt led the United States during WWII - and saved the United Kingdom - in a wheelchair."

Similarly, Globo News journalist Marta Grace posted, "Your choice of cover was beyond tasteless and disrespectful. My goodness, how could you?"

Journalist James Blitz, formerly of Financial Times, wrote, "I don't like this cover. There is nothing wrong with a person who uses a walking frame or a wheelchair. Nothing."

Trump opponent Luís Carvalho tweeted a parody image of the cover that kept the headline "No Way to Run a Country" but tweeted a depiction of Trump in handcuffs.

Democratic activist Denise Boone posted, "Trump should not be running."

However, the far-right World Net Daily — known for promoting MAGA conspiracy theories — attacked The Economist for having supported Biden in the past.
