Donald Trump twice endorses Brazil's right-wing conspiracy theorist President Jair Bolsonaro

Former President Donald Trump endorsed Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro on Saturday night hours before citizens of Earth's fourth-largest democracy begin voting on Sunday.

Trump published a video while flying home after delivering an ominously embittered speech in Warren, Michigan in support of Bolsonaro, who has earned the monicker of "Tropical Trump" due to his right-wing populist policies, anti-environmental record, and embrace of election conspiracy theories.

Climate scientists and activists are particularly concerned that a Bolsonaro victory over his liberal opponent, former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, would hasten the destruction of the Amazon Rainforest and ruin any chance humanity has of staving off the worst consequences of global warming. Bolsonaro downplayed the severity of the COVID-19 pandemic as well, and his manufactured skepticism of masking and vaccines led to Brazil having the planet's fourth-highest death rate.

While Lula is leading in the polls and expected to win, Bolsonaro has vowed to challenge the results of the contest if he loses, much as Trump did after he was defeated by President Joe Biden in 2020.

Speaking from aboard his personal aircraft, Trump echoed his self-congratulatory rhetoric, including the idea that Bolsonaro should remain in power past his constitutionally-limited two consecutive terms:

People of Brazil: you have a great opportunity to reelect a fantastic leader, a fantastic man, one of the great presidents of any country in the world, President Bolsonaro. He's done an absolutely incredible job with your economy, with your country, and he's respected by everybody all throughout the world. So I strongly endorse President Bolsonaro. He will be your leader for hopefully a long time. He has taken your country to great heights, and again, your country is now respected because of him all over the world.

So go out and vote for Bolsonaro.

Trump also posted on his failing Twitter knockoff app Truth Social:

BRAZIL, VOTE FOR JAIR BOLSONARO: There is a VERY BIG Election taking place tomorrow, one of Worldwide importance. A great and highly respected man, Brazil’s President, Jair Bolsonaro, is up for re-election, and based on all that he has done, and all that he is doing for the wonderful people of his beloved country, everyone should enthusiastically go out and VOTE for him. Jair Bolsonaro has my Complete and Total Endorsement. He will never let you down!
