Don Jr. rips GOP senators for 'remaining silent' about bombshell Colorado court ruling
21 December 2023
The Colorado Supreme Court's ruling that 2024 GOP presidential frontrunner Donald Trump is disqualified from the state's Republican primary ballot is being applauded by a variety of Trump critics and slammed by Trump's loyalists — including Donald Trump Jr., who has attacked Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky) and Sen. John Thune (R-South Dakota) for not being quick to respond to the decision.
According to a 4-3 Colorado Supreme Court majority, Trump is ineligible for inclusion on the state's ballot based on Section 3 of the U.S. Constitution's 14th Amendment — which states that an "officer" who has engaged in "insurrection" is disqualified from holding office.
Anti-Trump attorneys who agree with the ruling range from conservative George Conway to progressive Elie Mystal. But former U.S. Attorney General Bill Barr, a one-time Trump ally turned outspoken critic, disagrees with the decision and fears it will benefit Trump politically — as he thrives on "grievance."
Don Jr. is clearly playing the grievance card, describing his father as a victim of persecution by the Colorado justices.
POLL: Should Trump be allowed to hold office again?
Sen. John Barrasso (R-Wyoming) slammed the ruling as the work of a "liberal activist court" and a "blatant, political attempt to silence American voters." And Don. Jr, on X (formerly Twitter), posted, "Mitch McConnell, John Thune and John Cornyn remain silent. Barrasso is the only one with the courage to weigh in against what the radical left is trying to do to my father."
The Hill's Alexander Bolton reports, "Some Republican senators think their party would be better off if Trump were not the GOP nominee in 2024, though polls show he is cruising easily to a third nomination for president. So while a group of GOP lawmakers is rallying to Trump's defense and demanding the U.S. Supreme Court immediately overturn the decision in Colorado, McConnell, Thune and other Trump skeptics in the Senate GOP conference are sitting this one out. At the very least, they're not eager to put more political pressure on the Supreme Court, which is now facing at least two major Trump-related rulings and will likely become a central player in the 2024 election."
