Ron DeSantis dealt bloody nose in federal judge's anti-drag law ruling

In a rebuke of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ ongoing culture war, a federal judge on Friday ruled that that the state can’t enforce a new anti-drag law.

Florida’s legislature earlier this year passed SB 1438, officially titled the “Protection of Children,” which would have punished venues and people who performed shows deemed “lewd.”

The judge granted a preliminary injunction in a case brought by the Hamburger Mary's, a drag-themed restaurant chain that sued the state alleging the law adversely affected its business, journalist Chris Geidner of the website Law Dork tweeted.

Florida Politics earlier this year reported that “Supporters of the measure (SB 1438), titled “Protection of Children,” argue it’s necessary to shield children from exposure to live pornography.”

“Opponents have labeled it the “anti-drag show” bill and say it’s nothing more than puritanical overreach by conservatives bent on further marginalizing the LGBTQ community.”
