'Actually shocking': Democrats sound the alarm after reading the actual whistleblower complaint against Trump

Congressional lawmakers on Wednesday evening finally read the bombshell whistleblower complaint at the center of one of the most volatile event in Donald Trump's presidency. And according to Democratic members of Congress — who aren't able to describe the complaint, which is still classified — it is even worse and more damaging to the president than what is publicly known.

The complaint was filed by a member of the intelligence community, and it is believed to concern Trump's conduct toward Ukraine. Under pressure from mounting concerns about the complaint, the White House released a memo at the center of the controversy Wednesday morning detailing a conversation Trump had with the president of Ukraine on July 25. Though the White House seemed to think the memo's release would ease concerns, it actually revealed a strong case that Trump pressured Ukraine to investigate his political rival Joe Biden in exchange for military aid, among other forms of help — a clear case of abuse of power, if not other crimes.

But both Rep. Mike Quigley (D-IL) and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said after reviewing the whistleblower complaint that it is even more troubling than the report of the conversation.

“Having read the documents in there I’m even more worried about what happened than I was when I read the memorandum of the conversation," said Schumer, according to NBC News' Frank Thorp. "There are so many facts have to be examined.”

Quigley seemed to agree on a CNN interview with Wolf Blitzer. He said it made him think about the fact that Trump once claimed he could shoot someone on Fifth Avenue and his base would stay with him.

"What I read, to me, was the political equivalent of that: defying the Constitution, committing a criminal act, and thinking 'Well, I can get away with it,'" Quigley said. "Deeply disturbing what we read this morning, alarming, reinforced to an extraordinary magnitude by the report that we've just read."

He added that the complaint is "extraordinarily detailed" and that it provides a "blueprint" for what Congress needs to uncover.

Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA), too, called the complaint a "five-alarm concern," saying that it details incident involving addition witnesses with knowledge of troubling behavior.

"It's actually shocking that so many people say this conduct and didn't come forward," he said.
