Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA) spent much of his energy as chair of House Intelligence Committee attempting to run interference for President Donald Trump and use the body's powers to cast doubt on the investigations surrounding the White House. Now that he's been deposed and no longer controls the committee, he's still trying to help the president escape accountability as best he can — but Democrats are empowered to stop him.
Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA) on the House Oversight Committee explained Tuesday on MSNBC how Nunes has tried to undermine the upcoming testimony of Michael Cohen.
Host Ali Velshi noted that Nunes had called for Cohen's testimony before the Intelligence Committee to be open to the public, rather than closed.
“The hearing tomorrow with the Oversight Committee is going to be open,” Khanna explained. “Michael Cohen is going to talk about everything he knows, everything that happened. And the intelligence one can’t be open. We can’t have Michael Cohen talking about sensitive information about the United States’ relationship with Russia or what Mueller is doing. I don’t think Americans would want that kind of information to be public.”
He added: "Devin Nunes knows that would be a way to kill the hearings. I mean, he’s not acting in good faith. Let's be very clear: Look, Michael Cohen is someone who’s afraid. He’s been intimidated by the president."
