Ah, the fair. Hot dogs, cotton candy, kettle corn, freak shows, carnival rides on the midway…and marijuana? Welcome to the 2015 DC State Fair.

Yep, that's right. The DC State Fair this fall is going to feature a "Best Bud" contest to give District pot growers a chance to strut their stuff. According to the contest entry form, competitors can submit one bud of between one and two grams. The buds must have been grown from seed.

The buds will be judged on looks, smell, and feel—how sticky the buds are, whether the stem bends or snaps—but the judges "will not sample or consumer your submission," the entry form says.

Such an event would not have been possible in DC last fall, but voters there overwhelmingly supported the Measure 71 initiative that legalized the possession and cultivation—but not the sale—of small amounts of weed. And this is one of the results.

It's not that weird if you stop and think about state fairs for a moment. Sure, there's all the yummy treats and thrilling rides, but what those fairs have been about since the beginning was agricultural products. When you're having competitions for the best bull, biggest pumpkin, and tastiest sweet corn, competing for the best pot grower prize seems very much of a piece.

As marijuana legalization spreads in the years to come, look for bud contests to start showing up at state fairs near you. And enjoy the added attraction.
