'Effectively tied': New poll spells trouble for Ted Cruz

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) has been warning fellow Republicans not to underestimate his Democratic opponent, Rep. Colin Allred (D-Texas).

The possibility of Allred winning Texas' 2024 U.S. Senate race, according to Cruz, cannot be ruled out. And a new poll, in fact, shows Allred within striking distance of the Texas Republican.

According to a poll released by the Texas Hispanic Policy Foundation (TxHPF) on Monday, September 23, Allred now trails Cruz by only 3 percent.

TxHPF CEO Jason Villalba, according to WFAA, said of the poll, "We have continued to see Allred consistently outperform the top of the ticket in this race. The data suggests that this speaks more to Allred’s favorables than what we are seeing in the national conversation."

According to Regina Montoya, a member of the TxHPF Board of Directors, "The dynamism of the Harris campaign has had an obvious down ballot impact in the Allred vs. Cruz race, where Colin is now effectively tied with Cruz going into the final days of the campaign."

The poll indicates that although Texas remains a red state, Democrats are gradually making progress there.

Texas Democrats have long performed well in major urban centers like Austin, Houston, Dallas and El Paso. But during the 2000s, Democrats typically lost statewide races in Texas by double digits. In 2018, however, former Rep. Beto O'Rourke lost to Cruz by only 2 percent. Then, in 2020, now-President Joe Biden lost Texas to GOP nominee Donald Trump by roughly 5 percent.
