Conservative critics of Donald Trump were hoping that when the results of the 2024 Iowa Caucuses came in, there would be a surprise or upset in favor of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis or former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley. But that surprise never materialized.
Trump was the clear winner on Monday, January 15, picking up more votes than DeSantis, Haley and Vivek Ramaswamy combined. Statewide, roughly 51 percent of the vote went to Trump compared to 21 percent for DeSantis, 19 percent for Haley and only 7 percent for Ramaswamy, who has dropped out of the race and endorsed Trump.
The Iowa Caucuses results, however, varied from county to county. Trump, MSNBC's Steve Kornacki has been stressing, won the vast majority of counties in Iowa. But in some of Iowa's counties, Trump won even more than 51 percent of the GOP primary vote.
POLL: Should Trump be allowed to hold office again?
Trump, according to the Associated Press, won Audubon County by 64.3 percent, Appanoose County by 71.9 percent, Buchanan County by 63.3 percent, Davis County by 67.3 percent, and Clinton County by 69.8 percent.
DeSantis came in a distant second place in most Iowa countries. But Dallas County was an outlier, with Trump winning 39 percent of the vote there compared to 26.6 percent for Haley and 25 percent for DeSantis.
Another outlier was Johnson County, which includes Iowa City and is the state's fourth most populous county. Trump and Haley were roughly tied in Johnson County, picking up roughly 35.5 percent of the vote each. However, Trump ultimately lost Johnson County to Haley by just one vote, which denied him a clean sweep of Iowa's 99 counties
