CNN Panel Derails After Trump Backer Defends His Flip-Flop on House GOP Immigration Bill: 'It's Obvious He's Lying'

David Urban, CNN’s consummate Donald Trump defender, on Sunday refused to acknowledge the president lied when he claimed he never encouraged House Republicans to pass an immigration bill he’d tweeted his support of just three days earlier.

Urban was speaking with CNN’s Jake Tapper on “State of the Union” Sunday about Trump’s false claim he “never pushed the Republicans in the House to vote for the Immigration Bill, either GOODLATTE 1 or 2,  because it could never have gotten enough Democrats as long as there is the 60 vote threshold.”

Three days earlier, Trump had tweeted—in all caps—about the “Goodlatte II” bill”:

"HOUSE REPUBLICANS SHOULD PASS THE STRONG BUT FAIR IMMIGRATION BILL, KNOWN AS GOODLATTE II, IN THEIR AFTERNOON VOTE TODAY, EVEN THOUGH THE DEMS WON'T LET IT PASS IN THE SENATE. PASSAGE WILL SHOW THAT WE WANT STRONG BORDERS & SECURITY WHILE THE DEMS WANT OPEN BORDERS = CRIME. WIN!" 

Rep. Nanette Diaz Barragán (D-CA) said Trump’s back and forth on the bill is “why we can't negotiate with this president.”

“Nobody can believe what he says.” she argued. “It's obvious he's lying outright.”

As Urban scoffed, Tapper noted “those tweets are complete contradictions.”

“I’m going to focus on what the president proposed, path for citizenship,” Urban said.

“But the problem is Democrats don’t, even Republicans are concerned about trying to negotiate with him because he contradicts himself,” Tapper explained.

"This is the president, he’s a negotiator, that’s what he's doing,” Urban said.

As CNN’s Corinne Jones tried to explain how Trump “created the crisis with DACA,” Urban tried to blame it on Obama, causing an uproar amongst the panelists.

“He doesn't know what he wants,” Jones said. “He is so contradictory when he says one thing then changes to another thing.”
