House GOP leaders were reportedly 'trying to avoid' the 'failed' vote to punish AG Garland
11 July 2024
In the U.S. House of Representatives, Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-Florida) pushed a resolution calling for Attorney General Merrick Garland to be fined for refusing to give House Republicans recordings of President Joe Biden being interviewed by special counsel Robert Hur.
But when the resolution came up for a vote on Thursday, July 11, it failed. Four Republicans joined House Democrats in voting "no."
Luna proposed fining Garland $10,000 per day.

During a conversation with her CNN colleague Wolf Blitzer after the vote, reporter Annie Grayer emphasized that this vote was something that some House Republicans were hoping to avoid.
Grayer told Blitzer, "This is a big win for Democrats and a loss for Republicans…. In fact, the House Republican leadership had tried to avoid this final vote from happening and was trying to compromise behind the scenes with Luna, I'm told. But because of the series of Democratic absences, this final vote ended up needing to happen today with an up or down vote — which again, Republican leadership was trying to avoid."
Grayer noted that Luna has told CNN she will try to bring up this resolution again.
"Just because it failed today does not mean she's going to stop trying," Grayer told Blitzer. "So, what we're seeing, Wolf, is just an effort on multiple fronts here from Republicans, trying to get these audio tapes of President Joe Biden. They held Attorney General Garland in contempt. They are suing in court now to get these tapes, and now, we have this resolution from Luna — which doesn't seem like it's going anywhere even though it failed the first time today."
