John Oliver offers Clarence Thomas $1 million a year — if he retires

During his 33 years on the U.S. Supreme Court, far-right Justice Clarence Thomas has been a highly polarizing figure — from his divisive Senate confirmation hearings in 1991 and Anita Hill's sexual harassment allegations to ProPublica's extensive reporting on the gifts he has received from billionaire donor Harlan Crow.

John Oliver had some laughs at Thomas' expense when the late-night host offered him $1 million per year if he resigns.

Oliver told viewers, "Clarence Thomas is arguably the most consequential justice on the court right now, and he's never really seemed to like the job. He's said it's not worth doing 'for the grief.' So what if he could keep the luxury perks that he clearly enjoys without having to endure all of that grief?"

The host of "Last Week Tonight" on HBO continued, "We have a special offer for you tonight. We are prepared to offer you $1 million a year for the rest of your life if you simply agree to leave the Supreme Court immediately and never come back…. A million dollars a year until you or I die."

Oliver added that HBO "is not putting up the money for this" and that "I am personally on the hook."

"I could be doing stand-up tours for your retirement for years," told his audience.
