Donald Trump
U.S. President Donald Trump, on Wednesday, June 4, announced a new travel ban affecting 12 different countries.
Effective June 9, citizens of Iran, Afghanistan, Myanmar, Somalia, Haiti, Chad, Sudan, Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Libya, and Yemen will not be allowed to enter the United States. And citizens of seven other countries — Venezuela, Cuba, Sierra Leone,
Burundi, Turkmenistan, Laos and Togo — will face partial restrictions on U.S. travel.
Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Connecticut), during a June 4 appearance on MSNBC, argued that the travel ban is meant to be a distraction from unpopular Trump policies — including the "big, beautiful bill" that narrowly passed in the U.S. House of Representatives, 215-214, and is now being hotly debated in the U.S. Senate.

Many critics of the megabill, which contains draconian cuts to Medicare and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), are warning that it will cause millions of Americans to lose their health insurance while giving tax breaks to billionaires. According to the Congressional Budget Office (CBO), up to 16 million Americans will lose their health insurance if the "big, beautiful bill" in its current form passes in the U.S. Senate.
Murphy told MSNBC's Jen Psaki, who formerly served as White House press secretary in the Biden Administration, that the One Big, Beautiful Bill Act of 2025 will "steal from regular Americans in order to pad the pockets of the rich."
Murphy told Psaki, "Nobody wants that. That's super unpopular. So how do you get that done? You distract people by making them think that they’re at war with other Americans — making them think that they have something to fear from people who look different from them or speak a different language."
The Connecticut senator added that this type of distraction is something "demagogues have done all throughout time…. while, on the side, they’re stealing from us."
