'Reagan looking down in shame': CA to file another lawsuit against Trump administration

The state of California has decided to file yet another lawsuit against the Trump administration.

The latest lawsuit — the 23rd filed by California against the administration — aims to contest an effort to overturn the state’s tougher emissions regulations, which go beyond federal standards.

During a press conference announcing the state's decision on Thursday, California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) referenced former President Ronald Reagan's environmental record during his time as the state's governor.

Newsom reportedly told President Donald Trump that Reagan would “be looking down in shame” if he signs legislation “authorizing the degradation of his legacy."

“We are ceding our leadership, and we are going backwards, a half a century, with yesterday’s technology,” he said, adding that the administration is “doubling down on stupid.”

State Attorney General Rob Bonta also spoke at the press conference and stated that California wants to ensure that future generations inherit clean air and a livable planet.

He criticized Trump's partisan approach, saying, “The president’s focus on red team versus blue team is threatening California’s lives, our economy and our environment. It’s undoubtedly shortsighted, and it’s also illegal.

Earlier on Thursday, the Senate voted 51-44 to overturn California’s planned phaseout of gas-powered vehicles. The bill is now on its way to Trump, who is expected to sign it into law.

The bill would revoke the Biden administration’s waiver that allowed the state to implement its stricter policy. Lawmakers advanced the measure under the Congressional Review Act, which permits the rollback of recent regulations with a simple majority vote.
