Republicans 'losing faith' as Trump is plagued by 'historically low' approval ratings

When MSNBC's Rachel Maddow offered a scathing critique of President Donald Trump's first 100 days back in the White House, she told colleague Katie Phang that she was struck not only by how badly he has "botched" his second presidency, but also, by how quickly his poll numbers have plummeted.

Trump's hardcore MAGA base remains devoted to him, and right-wing media outlets —from Fox News to Newsmax to Steve Bannon's "War Room" podcast — continue giving him lavish praise. But many polls are showing independents and swing voters giving him low marks on everything from immigration to the economy.

The Guardian's Adam Gabbatt examines Trump's plummeting poll numbers in an article published on Saturday, April 26.

"Americans, including some Republicans, are losing faith in Donald Trump across a range of key issues, according to polling released this week," Gabbatt explains. "One survey found a majority describing the president’s second stint in the White House so far as 'scary.' Along with poor ratings on the economy and Trump's immigration policy, a survey released on Saturday found that only 24 percent of Americans believe Trump has focused on the right priorities as president."

Gabbatt adds, "That poll comes as Trump's popularity is historically low for a leader this early in a term. More than half of voters disapprove of Trump's performance as president, and majorities oppose his tariff policies and slashing of the federal workforce."

An Associated Press/NORC Center poll released on April 26 found that 54 percent of Republicans believe Trump is focused on the "right priorities." But the number falls to only 9 percent among independents.

A New York Times/Siena College poll also released in late April found Trump's overall approval is at 42 percent overall but only 29 percent among independents. That poll also found that only 43 percent of voters approve of his handling of the economy.
