Conservative: Republicans ignoring Trump threats stoking 'a bonfire already covered in kerosene'

Editor-in-Chief Charlie Sykes of the conservative news outlet The Bulwark on Thursday blasted the 2024 Republican presidential primary hopefuls who avoid levying criticism of indicted ex-President Donald Trump as he escalates his threats in the wake of the ninety-one felony charges that have been filed against him.

"You would hope that at least one or two of those Republican candidates would do the bare minimum and say, 'Hey, at this dangerous moment in American history, we all ought to lower the temperature of our rhetoric, including the former president, because this is dangerous. This is not theoretical. We've seen it over and over again," Sykes said on MSNBC's The Reidout.

"Churches in Charleston. Synagogues in Pittsburgh. Stores in El Paso. Grocery stores in Buffalo. We've had attacks on FBI offices. Pipe bombs sent to journalists," Sykes continued, further alluding to the Provo, Utah man who was shot and killed during a standoff with Federal Bureau of Investigation agents last Thursday after he called for an "assassination" ahead of President Joe Biden's visit to the state. Craig Deleeuw Robertson's threats were also directed toward Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, New York Attorney General Letitia James, United States Attorney General Merrick Garland, and Democratic California Governor Gavin Newsom, according to NBC News.

All of that in mind, Sykes added that "I'm just scratching the surface here. This is really a dangerous moment. And Donald Trump is flicking matches at a bonfire already covered in kerosene and not one of the other Republicans is calling on him to tone it down, with the exception of Chris Christie."
