During a Friday morning, September 26 appearance on MSNBC's "Morning Joe," legal analyst Barbara McQuade — a law professor and ex-federal prosecutor for the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) — was vehemently critical of the federal indictment of former FBI Director James Comey. And she argued that whenever President Donald Trump rails against Comey on social media, he makes "the defense's case easier."
But McQuade isn't the only one making that type of argument against Trump.
Back in 2020, then-U.S. Attorney General Bill Barr argued that Trump's nonstop social media posts made it harder for him to do his job. And the frustration that Barr expressed five years ago, according to CNN's Aaron Blake, is coming back to haunt Trump now that Comey is being indicted on two federal charges.
In a September 26 post on his Truth social platform, Trump wrote, "Whether you like Corrupt James Comey or not, and I can't imagine too many people liking him, HE LIED! It is not a complex lie, it's a very simple, but IMPORTANT one. There is no way he can explain his way out of it. He is a Dirty Cop, and always has been, but he was just assigned a Crooked Joe Biden appointed Judge, so he's off to a very good start. Nevertheless, words are words, and he wasn't hedging or in dispute. He was very positive, there was no doubt in his mind about what he said, or meant by saying it."
Trump continued, "He left himself ZERO margin of error on a big and important answer to a question. He just got unexpectedly caught. James 'Dirty Cop' Comey was a destroyer of lives. He knew exactly what he was saying, and that it was a very serious and far reaching lie for which a very big price must be paid! President DJT."
Politico's Kyle Cheney highlighted those comments in a September 26 post on X, formerly Twitter, writing, "Trump’s inability to stop live commentary on Comey's case could actually doom it. This isn't just a broad 'no one is above the law,' he's doing legal analysis that Comey's team will plug right into their selective prosecution motion to dismiss the indictment."
Blake, in response Cheney's tweet, wrote, "In 2020, Trump AG Bill Barr said Trump's public missives about ongoing cases 'make it impossible for me to do my job.' 'I think it’s time to stop the tweeting about Department of Justice criminal cases,' Barr said."
Comey has been indicted on charges of lying to Congress under oath and obstructing a congressional proceeding.
