'Not remotely reasonable': House GOP impeachment efforts suffer yet another setback
19 March 2024
This Wednesday, March 20, the House Oversight and Judiciary Committees are holding a hearing with a decidedly anti-President Joe Biden theme that accuses him of "influence peddling."
One of the "invited witnesses" listed in a House Oversight press release is Devon Archer, a former business associate of the president's son Hunter Biden. But according to NBC News, Archer has "declined" the invitation.
NBC News has obtained a copy of a March 18 letter that Matthew Schwartz, Archer's attorney, sent to the Oversight Committee.

In the letter — which has also been reported by ABC News — Schwartz wrote, "It is not remotely reasonable to ask an important witness in what is sure to be a closely watched public hearing that the Committee has provocatively entitled 'Influence Peddling: Examining Joe Biden's Abuse of Public Office' to prepare witness testimony in one business day, and to prepare to give public testimony in less than three days — particularly when he is traveling."
In the letter, Schwartz added that the invitation for Archer "was never sent to me, and as you well know (and as the lawyer to whom you sent the letter has confirmed), I have been the only lawyer to represent Mr. Archer in the Committee's work, including representing him at the July interview."
Schwartz told NBC News, "Mr. Archer remains ready and willing to cooperate with all authorities in their legitimate investigations, just as he has already done repeatedly with both House and DOJ investigators."
So far, efforts to impeach President Biden have not been going well for pro-Donald Trump House Republicans — including House Oversight Chairman James Comer (R-Kentucky) and House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan (R-Ohio).

Comer touted former FBI informant Alexander Smirnov (not to be confused with the figure skater) as his star witness against Joe Biden, who he claims committed illegal acts to promote his son's business activities. But Comer's impeachment efforts suffered a major setback when Smirnov was arrested for allegedly lying to the FBI; later, it was revealed that Smirnov was getting his anti-Bidens information from Russian government intelligence.
