GOP split on Biden impeachment as far-right faction rolls full steam ahead

Republicans view an impeachment of homeland security secretary Alejandro Mayorkas as the first step to removing President Joe Biden, but not all of them share the same degree of enthusiasm.

GOP lawmakers are deeply divided on impeaching the president, putting House speaker Kevin McCarthy in the middle of a power struggle between far-right insurgents and lawmakers from more competitive districts who worry the gambit will put their positions at risk, reported the New York Times.

“We’re supposed to impeach on high crimes and misdemeanors,” said Rep. Don Bacon (R-NE), who has said he's opposed to impeaching Mayorkas over border policy disagreements and told the newspaper he's "not really" inclined to do the same to Biden.

Even Republicans who favor removing Biden are skeptical that impeaching him over border policy is the strongest case, and would prefer to go after him for allegations involving his son Hunter Biden.

"[That's] where the president really is going to have the majority of his problems," said Rep. Carlos Gimenez (R-FL).

Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) forced a vote last month demanding an investigation into Biden for “intentionally" facilitating "a complete and total invasion at the southern border," as her resolution put it, while making no mention of Mayorkas, who was the subject of a 55-page report filed by the House Homeland Security Committee seen as the first step toward impeachment.

“We’ve been looking into the complete failures, the Biden administration’s complete failures at the southwest border,” said that committee's chairman, Rep. Mark Green (R-TN), who added that his panel will also look at Biden's personal actions. “We will dig deeply into it.”
