Ben Sasse tickles the Senate chamber with 'perfect description' of John Kennedy's career as a lawyer

United States Senator Ben Sasse (R-Nebraska) threw some shade at Senator John Kennedy (R-Louisiana) during Tuesday's hearings to confirm Judge Kentaji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court.

Sasse was one of seven Republican Senators to vote to remove former President Donald Trump from office after he was impeached (a second time) for inciting the January 6th, 2021 Capitol insurrection. Kennedy chose to let Trump off the hook.

The exchange, however, was a light-hearted jab by Sasse at Kennedy for being a duplicitous attorney, which roused chuckles throughout the chamber – including from Jackson.

"I'm not an attorney. So, the farming and ranching people where I come from know that John Kennedy is a super-smart Rhodes lawyer who kinda pretends to be an ahh shucks kind of guy as he picks your pocket," quipped Sasse, who served as a fellow at the University of Texas LBJ School of Public Affairs' Center for Politics and Governance and the president of Midland University before his election to the Senate in 2014.

"Will I get equal time, Mr. Chairman?" Kennedy, a former Democrat and five-term state treasurer who became a Republican in 2007, interjected.

"He always gets equal time," Sasse fired back. "He always gets bonus time."
