'Bad for Europe, Good for Putin': Foreign Policy Expert Predicts Trump's Meeting with Allies Will Be Disastrous

As President Donald Trump travels to meet with NATO allies in Europe, observers and experts in diplomacy expect fireworks.

Ian Bremmer, the head of the Eurasia Group, explained Tuesday on MSNBC that the summit might have had a chance at bolstering relationships with U.S. allies if Trump had sent Vice President Mike Pence to go in his place. But with the president in attendance, Bremmer argued, it's bound to end in animus, just like the recent G-7 meeting.

"This meeting will go badly," Bremmer told MSNBC's Katy Tur. While Trump seems hostile toward American allies, however, he seems positively enthusiastic to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

And right on cue, Trump tweeted an attack on American allies before Bremmer's MSNBC segment was over: "The European Union makes it impossible for our farmers and workers and companies to do business in Europe (U.S. has a $151 Billion trade deficit), and then they want us to happily defend them through NATO, and nicely pay for it. Just doesn’t work!"

Bremmer noted that the trade deficit Trump tweeted was a misleading attack on Europe because it only counts the trade in goods, not the trade in services where the U.S. is dominant.

The tweet from Trump only confirmed Bremmer's view of the summit: "Bad for Europe, good for Putin," he said.
