The 'ghosts of 2020' are lingering as 'election deniers' flood 2024 GOP convention

Former President Donald Trump's false claim that the 2020 election was stolen from him has been repeatedly debunked, and some of Trump's supporters have said that for Republicans, there is nothing to be gained from obsessing over the United States' last presidential race.

But Axios' Zachary Basu, in an article published on July 17, observes that some MAGA Republicans still can't get over 2020 as the GOP holds its 2024 convention in Milwaukee.

"Taking a lesson from their disappointing 2022 midterms," Basu explains, "top Republicans are intent on running a campaign centered on this election, not the last one. But the ghosts of 2020 — and of January 6 — are everywhere.… At Donald Trump's Republican National Convention, acknowledging 'election irregularities' in 2020 is the minimum bar for entry."

Basu adds, "Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio), Trump's new running mate, has said he would not have certified the 2020 election had he been vice president on January 6, 2021, instead of Mike Pence. January 6 protesters and fake electors are among those serving as delegates at the RNC, including Nevada GOP Chair Michael McDonald, who seconded Trump's official nomination on Monday."

The Axios reporter notes that some of the "prominent election deniers" who spoke at the convention on Tuesday, July 16 included House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana), Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-New York) and Bennie Moreno (who is running against Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown in Ohio's 2024 U.S. Senate race).

A video aired at the convention on July 16 showed Trump claiming, "We never want what happened in 2020 to happen again…. Keep your eyes open, because these people want to cheat. And they do cheat, and frankly, it's the only thing they do well."
