Dems are playing up Harris’ huge crowd sizes — and it's 'driving Trump nuts'

On Tuesday, August 6, Salon's Amanda Marcotte attended two presidential election-related events in Philadelphia: Vice President Kamala Harris' rally with Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, her running mate, at Temple University's Liacouras Center, and an event with Donald Trump's running mate, Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio), in South Philly. Marcotte compared the two in a biting article published the following day, emphasizing that while Vance's was "underwhelming," Harris' was not only much larger — it was also way more energetic.

There were around 12,000 attendees at the Liacouras Center, and subsequent Harris/Walz rallies in Wisconsin and Michigan were in the thousands as well.

In an article published on August 9, Axios' Zachary Basu reports that Democrats are making a point of drawing attention to the size of her rallies — much to Trump's frustration.

"It's not just Donald Trump obsessing about crowd size at events," Basu observes. "Democrats are gleefully jumping into the comparison game, powered by a surge in grassroots enthusiasm."

Basu adds, "For the first time in more than a decade, Democrats believe the candidates are right — and the conditions are ripe — to break up Trump's monopoly over raucous campaign rallies.…The shift in mindset is clearly driving Trump nuts."

Basu points out that when Trump held a press conference at Mar-a-Lago on August 8, he was incredibly defensive about the size of Harris' rallies.

Attacking the "dishonest" press, Trump claimed that his events have been "10 times, 20 times, 30 times" larger.

Trump told reporters, "In history, for any country, nobody's had crowds like I have. If you look at Martin Luther King when he did his great speech.… and you look at the picture of his crowd, my crowd — we actually had more people."

Basu notes that on his Truth Social platform, Trump has "baselessly claimed that Harris' campaign is paying people to attend its rallies."
