'Hopefully she’s getting paid well': Analysts slam Trump lawyer over 'blatant lies'

During Monday's episode of MSNBC's The 11th Hour with Stephanie Ruhle, Suzanne Craig, a New York Times investigative journalist, and Catherine Christian, former assistant district attorney in the Manhattan district attorney's office, discussed ex-President Donald Trump lawyer Alina Habba's "blatant lies" in the MAGA hopeful's New York civil fraud trial.

"She said to the judge, you in your remarks said that the resort is worth $18 million," Craig said referring to Habba. "And he actually — they had a back and forth and he corrected her and said, 'I never said that. Read the ruling and it actually doesn't say that.' It says there was property valuations that were put on it of that amount. The judge didn't say that was the amount. He hasn't done an appraisal. She was just getting things wrong—"

Ruhle interrupted saying, "But by design she wasn't getting them wrong because they were honest mistakes."

Craig replied, "But this is what Donald Trump does. He repeats a lie until its past and the history is fact."

Ruhle emphasized, "And that's it. She wasn't getting them wrong because she didn't know better. She knew better. She knew what the judge ruled last week. And donald trump actually knows the value of his assets, right? All of this is rooted in the value of his brand that he has been BS-ing for 20 years, right? When he was an institutional client of Deutsche bank, he said to them, 'Oh, my brand value is now worth 'X.' They told him to go take a hike. So, he found a private bank or on the other side of the building, who was gonna believe his BS, and it worked. So, what are the consequences for a lawyer who stands up in front of his courthouse and just tells blatant lies?"

Christian replied, "Well, there's no consequences for Donald Trump, but lawyers — because that was an opening statement, it basically was her giving a press — she's also I think his press spokesperson for these cases. she is a real lawyer, but she also acts as his press person. Her name is Miss Habba — I forgot her first name. So, you can't, in court, the rules of professional responsibility, make arguments that you knowingly know are not based in law and fact. You just can't do that. You can make arguments, and you know, all of us who's tried cases, you step on that line. But if you know for a fact that it's not based on law and facts, you're not supposed to make that. So, she might be dealing with issues after this trial. So, hopefully she's getting paid well."
