Revealed: Alito’s connection to top GOP judicial activist and far-right German billionaire

When the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade after 49 years in its Dobbs v. Jackson's Women Health Organization ruling of 2022, two of the far-right social conservatives who helped make that happen were Justice Samuel Alito and longtime judicial activist Leonard Leo.

Known for his extensive work with the Federalist Society, Leo spent years lobbying to push the High Court to the far right. Overturning Roe was among his top goals, and in 2022, Leo got his wish.

In an article published on September 17, The Guardian's Martin Pengelly details the connection between Alito, Leo and Gloria von Thurn und Taxis — a German billionaire with "close links to the far-right Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) party."

Alito, according to Pengelly, once "accepted expensive concert tickets" from und Taxis."

Pengelly reports, "(Justice Clarence) Thomas and Alito….. have been the subject of numerous reports about undeclared gifts from right-wing donors, fueling an ethics crisis now stoked by news of Alito's acceptance of concert tickets valued at $900 from von Thurn und Taxis…. Von Thurn und Taxis told German media that Alito and his wife, Martha-Ann, attended a concert at her castle in Bavaria last year as 'private friends.'"

According to Pengelly, Alito and und Taxis are both linked to the Napa Institute, which the Guardian reporter describes as an "ultra-conservative Catholic U.S. group whose board members include" Leo.

Pengelly notes, "Also among Napa Legal Institute directors is Alan Sears, founder of the Alliance Defending Freedom. The ADF was the principal driver of Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, the case in which the Supreme Court ended the federal right to abortion, with Alito writing the ruling handed down in June 2022.
