'Joe Biden will sign it': Kamala Harris calls for Dems to 'codify' abortion rights when they have a majority
23 June 2023
On Tuesday night, June 20, MSNBC's Joy Reid brought on Vice President Kamala Harris for a panel discussion on the first anniversary of Roe v. Wade's demise. The broadcast was billed as "One Year Post-Roe: A ReidOut Special with VP Harris."
During the hour-long conversation, Harris called for Congress to codify abortion as a national right if Democrats have the votes in 2025 and President Joe Biden is reelected. Democrats currently have a small effective majority in the U.S. Senate, while Republicans narrowly control the U.S. House of Representatives under Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-California).
The vice president told Reid, "We are in the midst of a health-care crisis…. I'll say, Joy, the bottom line is this: We have got to understand the connection between this issue and elections. Elections matter. We've seen that in the work that has been done in the various states…. Let me tell you something: Our President Joe Biden, when that legislation gets passed to codify and put in place the protections of Roe v. Wade, Joe Biden will sign it. So, let's make sure that everybody you know is registered to vote."
