CNN pulls back the curtain on little-known Trump supporter who was instrumental in pushing for election coup

On CNN Wednesday, reporter Sunlen Surfaty did a deep dive into Cleta Mitchell — a little-known pro-Trump lawyer who played a big part in trying to overthrow the results of the 2020 presidential election.

"She is not a household name," said Surfaty. "But lawyer Cleta Mitchell is a leader in President Trump's attempt to overturn the 2020 election. Named multiple times in a newly released Senate Judiciary report for her role in the pressure campaign on the Department of Justice to investigate unfounded claims of election fraud."

Surfaty then documented the ways Mitchell pushed to have the 2020 election results overturned, including emailing then-White House chief of staff Mark Meadows about purported evidence she'd collected about election fraud in Georgia.

Mitchell was also heard on Trump's infamous January 2nd call to Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, whom he encouraged to "find" 12,000 votes needed to overtake President Joe Biden in the state.

"Her investment with Trump came as a surprise to many, including her law firm, and led to her swift departure," said Surfaty. "Mitchell was first pulled in 24 hours after election day as she recounts in a little noticed podcast viewed by CNN."

"I got a call from Mark Meadows," said Mitchell in the podcast. "I flew to Atlanta, and I — and thus began my involvement with the post-election."

Later, Mitchell was involved in the failed "audit" of votes in Arizona, which actually gave Biden a bigger lead over Trump than the official state count.
