As “Justice for George Floyd” protests continue to be held in Washington, D.C. and other cities all over the U.S., muralists voiced their support for Black Lives Matter in the nation’s capital by painting the group’s name in all-capital letters on a block of 16th Street on Friday near Lafayette Square.\

On Twitter, John Falcicchio—chief of staff for Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser—posted, “There was a dispute this week about whose street this week about whose street this is. Mayor Bowser wanted to make it abundantly clear that this is DC’s street and to honor demonstrators who peacefully protested on Monday evening.”

While the “BLACK LIVES MATTER” message was being painted, municipal dump trucks blocked off that part of 16th Street.

Members of Black Lives Matters’ Washington, D.C. chapter have commented on the mural on Twitter and criticized the mural as political theater—saying, “This is a performative distraction from real policy changes. Bowser has consistently been on the wrong side of BLMDC history. This is to appease white liberals while ignoring our demands. Black Lives Matter means defund the police.”
