Far-right talk radio host Rush Limbaugh has never been shy about trafficking in conspiracy theories, and on his February 24 broadcast, he claimed that coronavirus is being “weaponized” by the Chinese government in an effort to harm Donald Trump’s presidency.

Some conspiracy theorists have claimed that coronavirus is a form of biological warfare; Limbaugh, however, believes that the “drive-by media” (Limbaugh's term for the mainstream media) are making coronavirus seem more dangerous than it actually is and that the “panic” is being used against President Trump and the stock market.

Limbaugh told listeners, “Coronavirus is being hyped as a deadly Andromeda strain or Ebola pandemic…. And the survival rate of this is 98%.... 2% of the people who get the coronavirus die. That’s less than the flu, folks.”

The 69-year-old Limbaugh (who was recently diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer) went on to say that “the Chi-coms are trying to weaponize this thing…. The Chi-coms, obviously in their lab, are doing something here with the coronavirus, and it got out. Some people believe that it got out on purpose.”

“Chi-coms” is Limbaugh’s abbreviation for “Chinese communists."

Limbaugh claimed that the Chinese government has “weaponized” coronavirus in order to “scare the investors, to scare people in business” and frighten them into “cashing out of the stock market.”

“The way it’s being used — I  believe the way it’s being weaponized is by virtue of the media,” Limbaugh claimed. “And I think that it is an effort to bring down Trump. And one of the ways it’s being used to do this is to scare investors, to scare people in business.”

Limbaugh also claimed, during his broadcast, that Sen. Bernie Sanders views the People’s Republic of China as a government that the United States should emulate — never mind the fact that Sanders has repeatedly said that his idea of “democratic socialism” is Sweden, Norway and Denmark, not Cuba or China.
