Deval Patrick drops out of 2020 Democratic presidential primary
Former Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick, following the New Hampshire primary, has dropped out of the 2020 Democratic presidential primary, ABC News is reporting.
Patrick, who entered the race in November, was the last remaining African-American candidate in the primary. Other African-Americans who have dropped out of the primary include Sen. Kamala Harris and Sen. Cory Booker.
In an official statement, Patrick told his supporters, “The vote in New Hampshire last night was not enough for us to create the practical wind at the campaign’s back to go on to the next round of voting. So, I have decided to suspend the campaign, effective immediately.”
In 2019, the primary received a lot of praise from liberals and progressives for being so ethnically diverse. But with the departures of Harris, Booker and Patrick as well as Asian-American tech entrepreneur Andrew Yang — who also dropped out of the race after the New Hampshire primary — the Democratic field has become increasingly white.
