When Republican David Trott was representing Michigan in the U.S. House of Representatives, he had a hard-right voting record: for example, Trott voted to repeal the Affordable Care Act of 2010 — unlike fellow Republicans Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski and the late John McCain in the U.S. Senate — and he supported Trump’s ban on immigration from predominantly Muslim countries. Regardless, Trott has been highly critical of Trump since leaving the House, and in a scathing letter to The Atlantic, the former GOP congressman explained why he is open to the possibility of voting for a Democrat in the 2020 presidential election.

In his letter, the 59-year-old Trott made it clear that he considers Trump a disaster on foreign policy. Trott wrote, “I will now have to consider voting for a Democrat. High unemployment, a stagnating economy and massive debt for a few years are better than alienating the rest of our allies, getting into a nuclear war with Iran, or allowing 10,000 Islamist soldiers to be set free in Syria. Trump is psychologically, morally, intellectually, and emotionally unfit for office.”

Trott also voiced his support for Trump’s impeachment, asserting that he could “only hope Congress impeaches and removes” him from office. Trump, on December 18, was indicated on two articles of impeachment by the U.S. House of Representatives: one for abuse of power, the other for obstruction of Congress. But with the Senate controlled by Republicans under the bitterly partisan leadership of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, the chances of Trump being removed from office by a two-thirds Senate majority are slim and none.

During a New York Times interview, Trott reiterated his disdain for Trump — asserting that he is “unfit for office” and that “a lot of Republicans feel the same way.” But he added that many Republicans are keeping their anti-Trump feelings to themselves because if they don’t, “the social media barrage will be overwhelming.”

Trott was first elected to the House via Michigan’s 11th Congressional District in 2014, and he won a second term in 2016 (when he defeated Democrat Anil Kumar by 13%). But Trott decided not to seek reelection in 2018, obviously fearing a blue wave in the House — and he was right to be concerned: Trott’s former seat is now held by Democratic Rep. Haley Stevens, who defeated Republican nominee Lena Epstein by 6% in 2018.

Despite his hard-right voting record, Trump supporter Meshawn Maddock (co-founder of Michigan Trump Republicans) is making the ridiculous claim that Trott is really a “Democrat in disguise.” Maddock told the Detroit News, “We have always suspected that David Trott is not conservative. He’s certainly not conservative enough for us in the 11th District.” And on Twitter, Maddock resorted to Trumpian snark when she told Trott to “crawl back into your very little hole.”
