Conservative slams Mitch McConnell and other Senate Republicans who have ‘rubber stamped’ Trump’s ‘corruption and self-interest’
Countless political pundits have been asserting that President Trump is almost certain to be impeached by the Democratic majority in the U.S. House of Representatives but acquitted in the Senate, where Republicans have a majority. CNN’s S.E. Cupp, a Never Trump conservative, doesn’t disagree. But that doesn’t make her any less critical of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell: over the weekend, Cupp slammed McConnell for going out of his way to protect Trump despite all the evidence against him.
“For months, the president and House Republicans have been united in an, albeit, gimmicky defense of Trump’s abuses of power — united against House Democrats, who have been putting together, brick by brick, a case for his impeachment,” Cupp noted.
This Wednesday, December 18, a full House vote on two articles of impeachment is expected: one on abuse of power, one on obstruction of Congress.
“It has been Trump and Republicans united against the Democrats,” Cupp explained. “But with the Senate up to bat after the House vote, Trump now has to face Republicans; Republicans in the Senate will decide his fate. Now, no one expects a sudden rush of courage from enough of them to convict and remove the president. It would take a full 20 to do that. Certainly, a few Republican senators could defect. But before any of that, Trump will have to contend with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. Good news for Trump: he’s all in to protect the president.”
McConnell, Cupp observed, recently told Fox News that he plans to “coordinate with the president’s lawyers.”
Cupp asserted, “OK, here’s the deal: Mitch McConnell doesn’t just want to get impeachment over with to protect Trump — he desperately wants to protect Senate Republicans too…. (But) no amount of ducking and covering will save Republicans from the truth, which is that they rubber-stamped this president’s corruption and self-interest and opened the door for future presidents to do even worse. No amount of cologne will cover up that kind of stench.”
