Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez explains why she loves a new GOP attack video
The more that far-right Republicans rail against Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), the more likely they are to make themselves look ridiculous — and in many cases, they end up discrediting themselves rather than her. A recent example is an anti-AOC video posted on Twitter by the Media Research Center (MRC).
The wingnut group hoped to discredit Ocasio-Cortez’ Green New Deal proposals and her views on climate change; instead, Ocasio-Cortez liked the attack video because in it, she sounds like an authority on the subject.
MRC’s attack video opens with the announcer saying, in a mocking, condescending tone, “more shallow thoughts with Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez” and segues into her statements on climate change — which, unfortunately for MRC, don’t sound shallow at all and demonstrate that she recognizes the severity of a problem that Republicans routinely dismiss as a hoax.
In the video, Ocasio-Cortez is seen explaining that while fighting climate change will be expensive, not fighting it will be much more expensive. AOC asserts, “You think overhauling our economy to decarbonize and save the planet is going to be expensive? Try not decarbonizing our economy and allowing sea levels to rise, every coastal city to go underwater.”
On Twitter, Ocasio-Cortez responded, “I love everything about this GOP attack ad. Republicans underestimate my intelligence bc I invite people into my home & talk about policy in plain English instead of DC jargon. They think that’s dumb, so they end up paying for ads that spread & explain our policy positions.”
And the MRC attack video did exactly that. Instead of discrediting Ocasio-Cortez, MRC ending up demonstrating that she is a credible source on climate change.

In fact, a draft summary of a new report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) that Agence France Presse (AFP) has obtained a copy of shows how vulnerable coastal cities like New York could be to rising sea levels in the years to come. AFP reports that New York City, Ocasio-Cortez’ home town, “could expect a 2.25-metre flood event once every five years between 2030-2045” if emissions aren’t reduced. In 1800, according to AFP, such a flooding event was expected every 500 years — meaning that severe flooding in NYC could be 100 times more likely in the 2030s and 2040s than it was at the dawn of the 19th Century.
In other words, IPCC’s research bears out Ocasio-Cortez’ warning about “allowing sea levels to rise” — a warning that MRC has ended up drawing attention to.
In MRC’s video, Ocasio-Cortez is also heard outlining another dire consequence of climate change: agricultural areas where food is grown becoming uninhabitable — thus reducing the world’s food supply.
Ocasio-Cortez, in the video, lays out perfectly why climate change is such a threat. And MRC’s attack video turns out to be, in effect, one of the best Green New Deal promotional videos of the month.
