Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) this week declared “case closed” regarding the Trump campaign’s interactions with Russian operatives — but days later, it was revealed that the Senate Intelligence Committee slapped Donald Trump Jr. with a subpoena to testify about plans for Trump Tower Moscow.

What makes this sequence of events notable is that CNN’s Jeremy Herb is now reporting that the Senate subpoena for Trump Jr. was actually issued “more than two weeks ago,” which presumably means that it didn’t come as a surprise to Trump Jr. on Wednesday when reports of the subpoena began to surface.

This also opens up questions of whether McConnell knew that the Senate committee led by Sen. Richard Burr (R-NC) had already subpoenaed Trump Jr. for further testimony when he publicly stated that it was time to move on from investigating the Trump campaign’s contacts with Russian operatives.
