One of President Donald Trump's tweets on Thursday about the U.S. Border Patrol was skewered by a surprising source: a former Homeland Security spokesperson who served under John Kelly, Trump's first DHS secretary.

Trump's tweet attempted to praise border agents and show his affinity for them:

But Dave Lapan, who now is vice president of communications at the Bipartisan Policy Center, pointed out that Trump's tweet was embarrassing and wrong on at least three fronts:

It's pretty ridiculous that Trump, who has made the border and immigration his key issue, can't even get the name of the agency he's standing with right.

But the deeper point is about Trump's willingness to blatantly lie about the people he supposedly defends and represents. Trump could probably be a much more powerful figure on the right wing if he gave up the Republican Party's thirst for slashing budgets and tearing down social welfare programs. Instead of resolving the contradiction in his populist posturing and his adherence to GOP orthodoxy, he simply lies to the faces of the people he claims to support, whether its border agents, farmers suffering from trade wars or people in red states getting kicked off their health care plans.
