GOP congressman warns it would be a ‘mistake’ for Republicans to continue ‘picking on’ Ocasio-Cortez: ‘She is smart’

Rep. James Comer (R-KY) is warning his fellow Republicans against “picking on” Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), calling the decision to do so a “mistake.”
Comer made the comment on Matt Jones’ Hey Kentucky! Monday night, McClatchy reports. He also discussed Rep. Andy Barr’s invitation to Ocasio-Cortez to tour a coal mine in Kentucky, insisted he doesn’t see an “upside” to the meeting.
“I think she’s pretty set in her ways,” Comer remarked.
As his remarks made their way across Twitter, Ocasio-Cortez hit back:

In response, Comer immediately took the bait, replying that his constituents know “Socialist policies” like Medicare for All and the Green New Deal “will not work.”
Still, he acknowledged the power behind Ocasio-Cortez’s “movement of millennials that follow her.”
“She is smart, and I think we need to be very prepared when we debate her on issues that we’re having a hard time with,” Comer admitted. “There’s still a future for coal but we need to make sure we’re debating the right people on that issue.”
